The Title of the Book

How We Are Here can be understood in more than one way.

The fact that we are here

Before any explanation, before any belief or conclusion, there is the simple and astonishing fact that we are here at all. Life is present before the mind has understood it.

How we are here as human beings

We are here in human form, shaped by body, mind, memory, culture, fear, longing, love, and all the conditions that make up a human life.

How we came to be here

Each of us arrives in this moment through a particular life: through choices, wounds, gifts, conditioning, relationships, losses, and circumstances we did not fully choose.

How we are here now

We are not only here physically. We are here in a certain inner state: hurried or present, divided or coherent, defended or available.

How we are here before thought explains life

Before life becomes a story, a problem, or an explanation, it can be sensed directly. This is the direction these pages call awareness of life.

How we are here with one another

We are here together. We affect one another through our words, our silence, our attention, our fear, our kindness, and the quality of presence we bring into contact.

How we are here in ordinary life

Awareness is not separate from daily life. It enters work, relationship, difficulty, grief, love, responsibility, and the ordinary moments where life actually happens.

How we are here inside the mystery

The title does not only ask how I am here. It asks how we are here together, inside one human experience, sharing a world we do not fully understand.

How We Are Here is therefore not a conclusion.

It is a doorway.
