Part 2 - The Opening
Common Doorways
Inner coherence is about alignment, grounding, and stability in this human life. Awareness is an opening beyond the ordinary frame through which this life is usually experienced. Heightened awareness extends that opening further still, into experiences that may feel mystical or visionary, expansive in their depth, or so unfamiliar that ordinary language struggles to hold them.
Because of that, the ways through which they become available are related, but not identical.
Before we go ahead here, the word doorway needs to be examined carefully. It is not meant to make any sincere path smaller than it is. Some doorways are simple and immediate, like a breath, a reflective question, or a moment of stillness. Others are much larger, sometimes ancient, subtle, and complete in their own practice and language. They may carry a whole way of living rather than a single exercise or technique.
To call something a doorway here is not to reduce it. It is only to say that, in the language of these pages, it helps make us available to what is already present. These pages do not stand above such paths. They only use their own language to describe the movement from being absorbed in the mind toward a more direct sensing of life.
Can you recognise the doorway through which life opens for you, while remaining open to the different doorways through which it may open for others?
A misunderstanding can easily arise when a practice becomes central in someone’s life. The practice may be beautiful, helpful, and deeply respected. It may have shaped the body, steadied the mind, opened the heart, and carried a person through many difficult seasons. None of that is denied here. The practice itself is not the issue.
The only place to be careful is where the mind begins to turn a doorway into identity. Then what once opened us can become something we defend. The mind may begin to measure progress, compare paths, or treat its chosen form as proof of specialness, correctness, or arrival. This can happen with yoga as easily as with prayer, meditation, or any sincere tradition. The outer language may differ, but the old pattern is the same: the doorway becomes part of the self-image, and what was meant to open us begins to close around us.
The following chapters in Part 3 are not against any practice, method, or belief. They simply do not place any one of them at the centre. They look at ordinary human life after the opening has begun to enter it.
Common doorways into Inner Coherence
Some doorways do not expand experience. They steady it.
They bring the system into order. They reduce inner conflict. They help thought, feeling, body, and nervous system come into alignment.
Two of the simplest and clearest are these:
Not Knowing
When the mind admits, “I do not know,” the effort to control life loosens. Clarity may then come less as an answer and more as honest contact with what is here.
Trust and surrender
When we stop fighting the present moment and stop feeding every mental impulse, the system can settle into a deeper order. Trust and surrender do not mean passivity. They mean that we are no longer constantly resisting what is happening. This allows the body, the nervous system, and the emotional life to come back into greater alignment.
These doorways do not take us away from life, they bring us more deeply into it.
They help us become fully here.
Common doorways into Awareness of Life
Other doorways do not primarily ground us more deeply in ordinary experience. They loosen its familiar frame. The familiar psychological centre becomes less dominant, and experience opens beyond the way it is normally organised.
Some of the more common doorways are these:
Stillness and meditation
When attention is no longer constantly pulled outward, the familiar sense of self can begin to loosen.
Nature
Oceans, forests, mountains, deserts, and wide open spaces can widen perception and reduce the feeling of being enclosed in the mental self.
The body
Breathwork, yoga, movement, sports and other embodied practices can reduce internal noise and open another mode of experiencing.
Love, awe, and devotion
These can loosen the boundaries of the separate self more quickly than analysis ever could. Prayer may belong here too, when it is not only a request for life to arrange the world of form differently, but a sincere opening of the heart. In that kind of prayer, the asking may become quieter, and listening may begin.
Inquiry
A real question can interrupt certainty and open a space in which a deeper level of experience becomes noticeable.
Flow
Music, creativity, craftsmanship, and total absorption in action can dissolve self-consciousness for a time.
Silence, solitude, and simplicity
When stimulation decreases, subtler dimensions of experience can become easier to sense.
Threshold moments
Certain moments bring us to the edge of what the usual self can manage. Deep grief, illness, crisis, beauty, surrender, or profound stillness may weaken the familiar narrative and reveal a wider field of being.
Common doorways into Heightened Awareness
Any of the doorways above may deepen into heightened awareness, but not by default.
Psychedelics can abruptly loosen the ordinary structure of mind and identity, opening experience beyond its familiar boundaries.
Certain forms of breathwork, including holotropic-inspired practices, may also loosen the ordinary structure of experience and open unusual states of awareness.
Of course, this list is not complete, and any of these doorways could be explored much further and in greater depth.
These pages too are a doorway. If they are turned into a system to defend, they have already been misunderstood.
But it is worth remembering that none of the doorways can create awareness.
They only make us more available to what is already here, while inner coherence helps that availability become livable.
